I have been waiting to share these with you for a long time. Last fall I was asked to make custom quilts from scratch for my customer to give to her 5 grandchildren. If you know me you know that this is right up my alley.
Creating my own unique quilts is something I have always enjoyed doing. Each of the 5 quilts were designed with each child’s likes/interests in mind and each quilt has their name on the front and a bible verse on a label on the back.
1st Quilt - Alyssa’s
She wanted Cats and Birds and lots of blue. I sewed big blocks of cat silhouettes at the bottom of the quilt. I added birds sitting on branches beside her name and cats peeking over the name strip at the top of the quilt.
2nd Quilt - Sammy’s
She wanted unicorns 🦄 and pinks and purples.
I used the pattern “Lisa the Unicorn” by Elizabeth Hartman for the pieced unicorn blocks and added some white appliqué unicorns overtop some zigzag and diamond blocks. We chose some teal, that we matched with the beautiful floral fabric, to go with the pinks and purples. For a fun colourful binding I used alternated strips of the different colours used in the unicorn manes.
Just flip this quilt over and see how STUNNING the purple ombre looks with the “Aloure” edge to edge stitching design.
3rd Quilt - Wyatt’s
I think this one is my favourite. I love the cute little foxes 🦊 which I made to look like some embroidered foxes on something else in his room. I added alternating different size triangle blocks to look like the tip of the fox’s tail. I quilted it using the “All That Jazz” edge to edge stitching design which made me think about animal fur and gives the quilt an awesome texture. We chose another ombré polk-a-dot for the back.
4th Quilt - Dean’s
This one is all about trucks and it’s the only one of the 5 quilts made using a kit (with a little change for a name strip).
What little boy doesn’t like trucks, right?
Pattern is “On The Go Truckin“ by Stacy Lest Hsu. I left out one row of trucks and added two front view trucks beside his name using the same On The Go fabrics by Moda.
For the quilting I tried to make the stitching look like tire tracks going across the quilt.
5th Quilt - Sadie’s
Well, this girl definitely did not want to miss out on anything. You’ll notice some similar appliqué and pieced blocks from the other girls quilts but we (myself and her Nan) wanted her quilt to be unique to her as well. She wanted cats, unicorns, figure skating and for the main colour to be Teal. Great colour choice Sadie 🥰. I love teal too.
I chose a block design with sashing in between to make it easier to keep the different themes working together. Instead of a strip with her name I used some paper pieced alphabet blocks (which I think look stunning).
I quilted this one with the “Popcorn” edge to edge stitching design which adds a whimsical texture to finish it off.
What did I miss? So much to say about these fabulous quilts. Such an honour to be able to create these one of a kind heirlooms for gifts from their Nan (Grandma). Also so much fun since I love designing unique quilts.
P.S. I hear that there’s a brand new grand baby so I may get to design another quilt. 😍
